How could successful men lie to him, Ben thought as sickly orange glimmer licked at his face. He’d been assured that testing Janet’s loyalty would deepen her commitment to him. Perhaps convince her to abandon the foolish notions feminism embued her with, convinced her mattered more than the satisfaction of her man. Was he not deserving of comfort and support? Of dutifiul compliance?
Just past the burning wreckage of his beloved Ram 1500 he spotted a figure lurking beyond the curb. Another emerged from the left. Another from the right. As Ben thought to run his knees forcibly buckled. Janet emerged from the smoke, flanked by what would have been her bridal party. “Why are you so scared, Ben? It’s just a test,” She chuckled and motioned to her Maid of Honor. The bridal party descended, pinning Ben to the pavement as the Maid of Honor wedged a 4×4 post between his ankles. Janet loomed like a flame-cloaked elemental brandishing the largest hammer Ben had ever seen.
